What is type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by excessively high blood sugar levels. Unlike type 1 diabetes, it generally occurs in adulthood and develops progressively when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn't produce enough of it to regulate blood glucose.

How does type 2 diabetes develop?

Normally, insulin produced by the pancreas allows glucose to enter cells to provide them with energy. In type 2 diabetes, cells gradually become resistant to insulin. The pancreas compensates by producing more insulin until it is exhausted, leading to a buildup of glucose in the blood — hyperglycemia.

The main causes :

Modifiable factors: overweight and abdominal obesity, sedentary lifestyle, diet rich in refined sugars and saturated fats, smoking, and high blood pressure.

Unmodifiable factors: age over 45, family history of diabetes, ethnicity — people of Indigenous, African, Hispanic, or Asian descent have a higher risk.

Important to know:

Uncontrolled type 2 diabetes can lead to serious long-term complications — cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, neuropathy, vision loss, and healing problems. It is frequently associated with’Hypertension and then high cholesterol, forming what is called metabolic syndrome. Early management and regular monitoring are essential to prevent these complications.

Symptoms to recognize : when to consult?

Our Virtuel MD doctors can assess your symptoms, prescribe necessary tests, and provide your diabetes follow-up online.

Excessive thirst and dry mouth

Intense and persistent thirst despite normal hydration is one of the first signs of high blood sugar. The body attempts to eliminate excess sugar through urine, leading to dehydration.

Frequent urination

Frequent urination, including at night, resulting from the kidneys' effort to eliminate excess glucose in the blood.

Persistent fatigue

Unexplained chronic fatigue caused by the inability of cells to properly use glucose as an energy source.

Blurred vision

Blood sugar fluctuations can affect the lens of the eye and cause temporary blurred vision. If left untreated, chronic high blood sugar can cause permanent damage to the retina.

Tingling or numbness

Tingling, burning, or numbness sensations in the hands and feet can indicate early diabetic neuropathy.

Signs of medical emergency :

  • Sudden confusion or loss of consciousness
  • Difficulty breathing with fruity breath — sign of ketoacidosis
  • Very high blood sugar with vomiting
  • Severe hypoglycemia - tremors, cold sweats, confusion

These symptoms can indicate a diabetic emergency requiring immediate intervention.

FAQ: Type 2 Diabetes

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the pancreas no longer produces insulin. It usually occurs in childhood or adolescence and requires lifelong insulin injections. Type 2 diabetes is linked to insulin resistance and develops gradually, often related to lifestyle. It represents more than 90 % of diabetes cases.

In some cases, significant weight loss and major lifestyle changes can lead to remission—that is, a return to normal blood sugar levels without medication. However, regular medical monitoring remains necessary. Our doctors can assist you in this process.

Several classes of medications exist, from first-line metformin to more recent treatments such as SGLT2 inhibitors or GLP-1 agonists (including semaglutide) which offer cardiovascular benefits and promote weight loss as a supplement. Our doctors prescribe the most suitable treatment for your profile.

For a recently diagnosed and slightly elevated type 2 diabetes, lifestyle modifications may be sufficient initially—balanced diet, regular physical activity, and weight loss. For the majority of patients, medication is necessary to maintain well-controlled blood sugar in the long term.
